Using Intimidation:
Making him or her afraid by using looks, actions, & gestures Smashing things Destroying his or her property Abusing pets Displaying weapons Using Emotional Abuse: Putting him or her down Making him or her feel bad about themselves Calling him or her names Making her think she’s crazy Playing mind games Making him or her feel guilty Using Isolation: Controlling what he or she does Controlling who he or she sees Controlling where he or she goes Limiting him or her outside involvement Using jealousy to justify actions Minimalizing, Denying, & Blaming: Making light of the abuse and not taking his or her - concerns about it seriously Saying the abuse didn't happen Shifting responsibility for abuse behavior Saying he or she caused it |
Using Children:
Making him orher feel guilty about the children Using the children to relay messages Using visitation to harass him or her Threatening to take children away Using Male Privilege: Treating her like a servant Making all the big decisions Acting like the “master of the castle” Being the one to define men’s and women’s roles Using Economic Abuse: Preventing him or her from getting or keeping a job Making him or her ask for money Giving him or her an allowance Taking his or her money Not letting him or her know about or have access to family income Using Coercion and Threats: Making and/or carrying out threats to do something to hurt him or her Threatening to leave him or her Threatening to commit suicide Threatening to report him or her to welfare Making him or her drop charges Make him or her do illegal things |
Domestic Violence Myths:
- Battered women/men exaggerate
- It can’t be that bad otherwise he or she wouldn’t stay
- Abuse is caused by alcohol
- Abuse is an anger management issue
- Men are aggressive by nature
